Day 17 - Last Kiss
One moment she was laughing and smiling, the next panic had set in and she was going under. Even in her drunken state, her fear of the water came back full force as she yelled for his name. Within seconds, her head submerged under the waves.
Merlot rushed to towards the water, plunging into it’s depths without hesitation. There was no time to think. Lacey needed him. He went underwater, swimming blindly and once he had an arm he clutched onto it and pulled her up and towards the beach, swimming until his feet hit solid ground enough to walk.
His heart was raising as he dragged her to shore. He was scared she wasn’t breathing, but focused his energy on getting her onto land. No! She’d be okay once they reached-
His feet touched dry sand and began doing CPR.
Tears of relief dripped onto her as she spurted out water. He tilted her head watching her take struggled breaths. But she was breathing at least and that was at least something.
"Merlot." She whispered.
"I’m here Lace." he whispered petting her hair in comfort, "I’m here. I got you, darlin’. You’re going to be alright now."
"I-" Lacey coughed and he tilted her head watched, troubled. She slowly turned her head towards him and smiled shakily, "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Merlot- I-" Lacey’s eyes drooped closed and with a small, sad smile on her face, "I’m sorry…"
"Lace!" Fear jolted him and he shook her slightly, "Lacey, baby. Wake up. No. Noonononono." He sobbed, rocking her in his arms. "Wake up for me. Please. Please, Lace, don’t leave me. Don’t leave me, please."
He kissed her cold lips as the town was enveloped into darkness.
